Are You Team Gaga or Team Beckham?
Rolex’s sister brand, Tudor, has enlisted two of the most famous, accomplished, and beloved people on Earth to represent their brand. They also couldn’t be more different. In honor of the world’s most competitive Tudor, Henry VIII, we propose a duel.
In case you are unfamiliar:
David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE, is a retired professional footballer. He is the first English player to win league titles in four countries: England, Spain, the United States and France. He retired in May 2013 after a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga is an American singer, song writer and actress known for her outraougous fashions, artistic music videos, and penchant for total reinvention.
Who’s More Famous?
Becks is one of the most famous footballers in history; Gaga one of the most famous singers. Having sold 27 million albums and 146 million singles as of January 2016, Gaga is one of the best-selling music artists in history. Her achievements include several Guinness World Records, six Grammys, three Brit Awards, and an award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Gaga has been declared Billboard's Artist of the Year and included among Forbes's power and earnings rankings. She has a Golden Globe and is also a frontrunner for Best Actress Oscar this year.
Becks is in a very small club of players who have competed (and scored) in three Word Cups and the World Cup is watched by roughly half of Earth’s population, around 3.4 billion people. He is also married to one of the most famous women in the world. Even though Gaga literally wrote an album called, “Fame," Beck’s eeks out a win.
As Pop Culture Icon:
Bend It Like Beckham is a classic. Hugh Grant gave his left foot an epic shout out in Love Actually. His endorsements, big paychecks, incredible good looks, uber-famous wife, and gorgeous children have solidified Beckham in the holy temple of international A-List icons.
There has never been a popular artist quite like Lady Gaga. Her performance in A Star is Born will go down in history. This article in New York Magazine really shows the breadth of her musical career. Her red carpet entrances will never be topped (She wore a dress made of raw steaks for heaven’s sake!) And yet, it was this seemingly routine affair in August of 2013 that would become the biggest meme of the decade and shorthand for anyone or anything that is well done—Yaaas Gaga Yaaas!
+1 Lady Gaga
They both do amazing work. Gaga has the Born This Way Foundation. Beckham founded the the David Beckham Academy and has been a big supporter of UNICEF.
So far they are tied. Let Instagram decide the winner. Lady Gaga has 31.2 million followers. And Beckham has ……. 52 million. Beckham wins! In the end, they’re both the perfect embodiments of the Tudor brand: extraordinary, yet relatable … and very, very special.
